Everton Bedlam Stuns City to Hand Arsenal the Keys to the Premier League

The Premier League title race took another dramatic turn on Monday as Manchester City stumbled in a chaotic 3-3 draw against a resilient Everton side. For Pep Guardiola, the result represents two points dropped in a pursuit where perfection is usually the minimum requirement. For Arsenal, the result is a massive boost, handing the North London side a significant psychological and numerical advantage as the season enters its final stretch.

City appeared to be in control during the first half, largely thanks to the persistence of Jeremy Doku. The Belgian winger was a constant thorn in the Toffees’ side, eventually breaking the deadlock in the 43rd minute. After an initial slip in the box threatened to waste a promising opening, Doku stayed composed, regained his footing, and lashed a strike from the edge of the area that left the goalkeeper with no chance. At that moment, it seemed City would coast to a routine victory, but the second half told a much different story.

Everton’s resurgence was sparked by a moment of high drama and VAR intervention in the 68th minute. Thierno Barry found the back of the net under peculiar circumstances; he was initially in an offside position when the ball was played, but a botched clearance by Marc Guehi changed the phase of play. Guehi’s attempt to pass back to Gianluigi Donnarumma inadvertently invited Barry to pounce. While the linesman initially raised the flag, a VAR review correctly determined that Guehi’s deliberate touch played Barry onside, equalizing the match and shifting the momentum entirely toward the hosts.

The goal rattled City, and Everton capitalized with clinical efficiency. Jake O’Brien rose highest to power home a header from a corner in the 73rd minute, and just eight minutes later, Barry secured his brace. The third goal was particularly damning for City’s midfield, as Mateo Kovacic missed a crucial challenge, allowing Everton to break away and extend their lead to 3-1.

City’s response was immediate but underlined a growing concern regarding Erling Haaland’s involvement. The Norwegian striker had been virtually invisible for 80 minutes, recording just a handful of touches. However, elite goalscorers only need a second. Directly from the ensuing kickoff, City surged forward, and Haaland clinical finish pulled the score to 3-2. It was a reminder of his lethality, even in a season where his overall influence on build-up play has been frequently questioned.

The final act belonged to Doku. With the clock deep into stoppage time and Donnarumma even venturing forward for a final corner, the ball fell to Doku in a carbon-copy position of his first goal. His second clinical strike of the afternoon salvaged a point for the defending champions, but the mood at the final whistle suggested it felt more like a defeat.

Arsenal now sits five points clear at the summit. While City still holds a game in hand, the pressure has shifted squarely onto the shoulders of Guardiola’s squad, who no longer have the luxury of any further slip-ups.

The 3-3 draw serves as a stark reminder of the Premier League’s unpredictability. While Manchester City showed championship mettle to fight back for a point, their defensive vulnerabilities at Goodison Park have given Arsenal the clearest path to the title they have had all season. With only a few matches remaining, the margin for error has officially vanished.
